I often get the question: “What are you listening to?” I always answer with noting that there is a ton of amazing music out there, and right in our own backyard, too. For Hip Hop x Asian America, even though I like to do deep dives into albums and artist catalogs, I don’t think I can keep up with the rate that all this beautiful music is getting released. I’m so inspired by folks like Richie, founder of Traktivist, which is an entire platform dedicated to promoting Asian American musicians across genres, to combat the idea that Asian American artists “aren’t marketable” or that we don’t exist.
So for me here at Hip Hop x Asian America, aside from essays, SOUNDBITES is a weekly selection of music, music videos, artists, mixtapes, throwbacks, DJs, etc, that will drop every Friday morning at 8:00 AM. (CURRENTLY ON HIATUS, gearing up for a second season!)
Drawing from the memories I have of burning CDs for friends and trading mixtapes, I hold onto the joy of sharing music that evoked a response— whether it be something deep and meaningful or just to dance and have fun. The first of SOUNDBITES comes tomorrow, and I can’t wait to start sharing more of music and art that has, and continues, to move me.
